Jenny Aitken

British Contemporary
Aitken16576
Jenny lives in Derbyshire, on the edge of the beautiful Peak District. Much of her work is marine in nature due to her strong family roots and connections to Cornwall and the Channel Islands. Regardless of subject, she strives to depict atmospheric light, colour and movement. She has a particular passion for contre jour lighting and has written a book on the subject, out with Search Press in March 2024.

After gaining her BA Joint Honours in Art & Art History, 1997 from UCW Aberystwyth, Jenny

has been painting professionally for over twenty-five years and is largely self-taught, having focused on photography during her degree.

Jenny works in oils, with a wide tonal range – contrasting greys with chroma, rich darks with tinted light. Her fascination with contre jour light inevitably drew her out of the studio, to work direct from the landscape. She loves to paint a place first from life, before creative refinement in the studio.

Her inspirations include masters of light, Sorolla, Sargent and Hopper.

Jenny exhibits in both the RSMA and ROI open exhibitions, and in 2023 was elected a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, winning the prestigious Baltic Exchange Award in the same year.
