William Sidney Cooper
Biography
William Sidney Cooper was a landscape painter who exhibited from 1871 to 1908; at the Royal Academy, as well as at Suffolk Street between 1881 and1891. Titles include “Springtime, Isle of Wight” 1881, “The Avon at Ringwood” 1889, “Twighlight on the Thames” 1884. “A View on the Thames” is in the Reading Museum.
Cooper was quite original in his painting of animals and figures and particularly excellent in his representation of cows. Not that he is ineffective in his portrayal of form, texture and character of other species - for he is truly magnificent in all - but these seem to be his favourite subjects and attract notice by their positions in his paintings and the evident care bestowed on their delineation. They may be considered as characteristic of Cooper. His pencilling is firm and free and his colouring remarkably good, of a full tone, and transparent.
William Sidney Cooper does not appear to have been related to Thomas Sidney Cooper.
