Maude Woakes
Biography
Maude Woakes was the daughter of George Goodwin Kilburne (1839-1924). Just by looking at her watercolours we can see the influence of her father in both subject and execution. Woakes schooling was clearly within her father’s studio showing a level of commitment from both father and daughter.
The reasons for the continuing popularity of the artist’s work are not difficult to understand, as they are similar to those in her lifetime, namely nostalgia for an elegant chivalrous past. Woakes was also a fastidious craftswoman, producing highly-finished, beautifully painted, decorative watercolours.
