Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans
Biography
Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans was born at Leir in Belgium on 9 August 1811. He was a genre painter, firstly a pupil of Theilemans and Vervoort then of Wappers. His pictures won him the surname of “The Belgian Gerard Dow”.
The sensitivity of Dyckman’s character is easily perceived in his work. In daily life he was so gentle that he endured to see a moody sky or a certain expression on the faces of those who were with him.
Dyckmans never turned his back on romanticism in which lay his strength and what little weakness he had. He is said to have possessed an original manner and to have succeeded in giving colour, dignity and charm to his work especially in the painting of fabrics and all sorts of accessories reminiscent of the old masters.
Dyckmans demanded more of his genre and here we can see his romanticism peeping around the corner uniting all Dyckmans’ excellence and moreover displaying a strength of colour, an ease of firmness, of touch, of which he did not always give proof.
Amongst his works were: Declaration of Love (1834), Paternal Lesson (1835), Playing at Chequers (1836) and Piano Lesson (1837).
