John Holland
Biography
John Holland was a painter mainly of landscapes and coastal scenes. He was born in Nottingham and exhibited at Suffolk Street between 1831 and 1879, also at the British Institution between 1865 and 1866.
Holland is a highly popular painter who is noted for his coastal scenes of which there are not many to be found. His coastal views were principally English but very occasionally he would turn his hand to painting views such as ‘Peel Harbour, Isle of Man’. One of the striking characteristics of much of his work was that he used old buildings (such as Peel Castle) as backdrops.
Holland’s work can be found at institutions including Nottingham Art Gallery.
His son John Holland Jnr was also a painter of landscapes and portraits.
