Hugo Kotschenreiter

Biography

Hugo Kotschenreiter was a German genre painter and illustrator, and had a preference for humorous, anecdotal subjects often plucking his models from real life people he knew and places he frequented. The choice of period costumes and settings was quite a deliberate move by Kotschenreiter enhancing the value of his subjects.

Born at Hof on 6 January 1854, Kotschenreiter attended and exhibited at l’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Nuremburg and also at the Munich Academy.

He travelled widely through Europe and also painted a few landscapes.
