Henry John Sylvester Stannard, R.B.A., R.S.A.
Biography
Henry John Sylvester Stannard was a Bedford landscape painter, who lived in the village of Flitwick. He was the son of Henry Stannard, and studied at South Kensington. The artist painted both landscape and rustic subjects.
Stannard had many imitators, particularly of the ‘cottage door’ variety, but few equals. Among the better practitioners of the genre along with Stannard were Helen Allingham, Myles Birket Foster and Arthur Claude Strachan. Stannard’s watercolours of picturesque old cottages enjoy almost worldwide fame. He made this subject his own speciality and with his delicate and soft coloured palette he placed images of children or small animals in humorous and charming anecdotal situations.
Stannard exhibited fifteen works at the Royal Academy including “The Old Homestead”, “The Trees Began to Whisper” and “The Trysting Lane”.
He also exhibited eight works at Suffolk Street.
