Biography
Giovanni Battista Torriglia was an Italian genre painter.
‘Delectable’ and ‘characteristic’ are two words which come to mind when viewing Torriglia’s vision of rural life. He wants figures to be made charming and adorable and furthermore he wants that vision to be true. Their antics could be made humorous but never unpleasant.
Everything here seems to be modelled on real life and its quickest movement is captured at a glance. The sunlight streaming through the doorway lights not only the room but all within, softly shaping and highlighting the characterful faces and meaningful postures of the family during a moment of happy contentment.
