Frederick Daniel Hardy

Biography

Frederick Daniel Hardy was a painter of genre scenes, especially interiors with children. He was the son of a musician and studied under Thomas Webster.

Hardy exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1851 and 1898 and at the British Institution between 1851 and 1856.

He was a Member of the Cranbrook Colony in Kent with Webster, A. E. Mulready, George Bernard O’Neill and J. C. Horsley. Hardy’s studio was in Webster’s house in Cranbrook.

Like Webster, Hardy painted humorous scenes of children, usually in detailed Victorian interiors, but his range of subjects sometimes included drawing room scenes and portraits.

He lived in Cranbrook until 1911.
