Frank Paton
Biography
Frank Paton was a genre and animal painter as well as illustrator who lived in London and Gravesend.
Although it is not know where he received his art training, it was obviously a sound course of study, as Paton became a first class artist. He is well known for his often humorous studies of animals, which are generally portrayed in anecdotal situations. In this respect his choice of subject suited beautifully the use for illustrations and greetings cards although in total he did very little work of this nature.
Paton was not interested in trying to humanise animals in his work. He would rather detail them true to their character, with their own playful traits which are so much easier to live with than some of the over sentimental canvases of Sir Edwin Landseer.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1872 - 1890 and at Suffolk Street and various other venues between 1878 - 1890.
