Edward Pritchett

Biography

Details of Edward Pritchett’s life have proved difficult to secure. However he left behind a considerable body of work. He was clearly an ardent admirer of the ancient and beautiful Italian city of Venice and it is this great city, the source of inspiration to so many of his European contemporaries who settled and worked there, that we find the vast portion of his oeuvre.

His paintings always have a picturesque quality in terms of a balanced composition, bright and cheerful colouring and peopled with groups of stylishly executed citizens and it is difficult to escape his debt to the great David Roberts RA.

Pritchett’s paintings found great favour with the collectors of this genre so much so that he accumulated sufficient wealth to enable him to set up his own art school.

He was a prodigious subscriber to the Royal Academy exhibitions in London between 1829 and 1849 and also to the British Institution and Suffolk Street. He is represented in many public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Gallery, Dublin, Manchester and elsewhere.
