Eduard Von Grutzner
Biography
Eduard von Grützner was a painter of genre who was born in Großkarlowitz on 26 May 1846. The son of a farmer, he was befriended by a local minister during his childhood, who schooled and encouraged Grützner in his artistic tendencies.
In 1864 Grützner went to Munich, where he began learning under the tuition of Hermann Dyck in his private school. He later received training from Hermann Anschültz at the Academy. In 1867 he became a student of Karl Theodor von Piloty, whose class he left in 1869 in order to form his own gallery. However, before he left, Grützner started work on a painting titled “In the Cellar of the Cloister”, and then in the time after he specialised with much success drawing scenes depicting monastic life. Grützner became professor of the Munich Academy in 1886 and was one of Adolf Hitler’s favourite artists.
