Claude T. stanfield Moore
Biography
Claude T. Stanfield Moore was born in Nottingham in 1853. He is best known for his impressive and romantic views of the Thames and London.
He was a prolific artist and often painted very large canvases and maintained a consistently high standard of detail in his drawing.
It is difficult to escape the influence of his fellow Nottingham artist Henry Dawson and that of Dawson’s Master the great Bristol painter James Baker Pyne in the complex surface of his canvases together with his luminous skies often lighting a canvas from the back and throwing the foreground detail almost into silhouette.
He was a great traveller and painted shipping off many of Britain’s best known ports including Scarborough and Whitby in Yorkshire. However, it seems the artist was eager to exhibit his work in his home town of Nottingham where he showed 80 paintings at the Castle Museum and where there remains a collection of his work in the permanent collection. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street.
