Charles Bertrand D’Entraygues
Biography
Charles Bertrand D’Entraygues was born in Brives on the 14th July 1851. He was a painter of genre as well as landscapes.
The artist entered the School de Beaux Arts under Toulouse (his Master) in 1851. He worked there until his debut at the Paris Salon (Societe des Artistes) in 1876 and where he obtained an honourable mention in 1899. He became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1904. Later he studied under Vernon and began to develop his style and subject matter. His kindergarten scenes were noted for their humorous touches. Works exhibited at the Salon were “ La Table des Enfants”, “La Musique Adourit les Moeurs”.
D’Entraygues had many imitators, particularly of the “cottage interior” variety, but few equals. D’Entraygues made paintings such as this example, his own particular speciality. Collectors think of his images as sentimental, but this was only part of his reason for painting them. D’Entraygues knew that they represented a vanishing way of life and was determined to record it before it was too late. His paintings therefore are as nostalgically historical as they are sentimental.
