Cecil Gordon Lawson

Biography

Cecil Gordon Lawson was a landscape painter and watercolourist. He was born in Shropshire to Scottish parents and came to London in 1861 with his father William Lawson, who was a portrait painter.

Cecil at first painted small detailed studies of fruit and flowers in the manner of William Henry Hunt.

Lawson exhibited between 1869 and 1882 at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and Grosvenor Gallery. He scored his first notable success with “The Minister’s Garden” in 1878 at the opening of Grosvenor Gallery.

The artist’s death four years later at the age of 31 cut short his promising career. What few pictures he did paint show him to be an artist “singularly sensitive to the grandeur and bold rhythm of nature” (Hardie). Many critics would still agree with Caw that “he remains one of the greatest landscape painters of his Century”.

Lawson’s wife Constance was a flower painter.
