Arthur Claude  Strachan

Biography

Arthur Claude Strachan was a painter of landscapes and cottages, mostly in watercolour. He was born in Edinburgh in 1865, and studied at Liverpool. He spent many years there but also lived at addresses in Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Cheshire as well as at Minehead, Somerset.

Strachan eventually returned to Scotland where his address was in Glasgow. Because of his many addresses it has always been difficult to obtain a great deal of information about him.

By the latter part of the Victorian period, garden painting had become one of the most popular subjects for the artist who went into the countryside looking for subject matter. Arthur Claude Strachan was one of a number of artists who painted pictures of this kind, and were often the gardens of farm labourers in which flowers were allowed to grow in wild profusion.

He exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and also at the Royal Academy, including two landscapes of North Wales.
